Abstract
The proportion of the elderly people are increasing because of the prolonged life span caused by improvement of living standards, progress of medical technology and facility, and advancement of welfare facility. We are now embracing a new era. The 21st century can be called “open era.” It is the era of information, openness, and diversification. Elderly people in a modern society lost their authority and roles as the family structure was destructed due to the rapid urbanization and industrialization. They actually experience isolations from their family, community, and peers. Similarly, Korean elderly people are segregated from Korean immigration society due to the rapid social changes and cultural and generational conflicts even if they may have skilled professional expertise. Therefore, the most critical problem in the 21st century will be the problem of the elderly people. The proportion of the elderly people is increasing swiftly. Korean adolescents and elderly people have been the most important groups in the Korean‐ American immigration history. Now, more serious problems lie in the elderly. It is because elderly people may end up their lives with loneliness after failing to adjust their new language and culture in America. Those who adjusted their elderly lives were the people who already adjusted to their new lives in America, those who viewed their strengths and weaknesses practically, and those who had positive self‐esteem when they were young. Therefore, strategies to change the lives of the Korean elderly are called for in the Korean community. Korean‐American churches emphasize the importance of the maintenance and development of Korean traditional values as believers, and thus they need to go back to “Jesus Community” as an organism.
